Discovering the Art Scene in Hackney Wick
This weekend we made our way to east London to check out Hackney WickED arts festival. In its 6th year, the festival invited visitors to attend open studios, exhibitions, performances, fetes, music, workshops, tours and more.
It was a weekend boosting with creativity, and good vibes. Festival Patron, Gavin Turk says, “What people don’t realise about Hackney WickED Art Festival is the honesty of the festival; it is made from the energy of the artists… It really is quite different to any other festivals that people will have gone to”
And it truly was.
This year the main locations were Forman’s Fish Island and Swan Wharf. We arrived and were immediately absorbed into the essence of the festival and of Hackney. There was food, a selection of locally brewed beers on sale, artists selling works, artists creating live work throughout the festival and many art installations on site which you could engage with. It was a perfect day out for friends and family alike.
This year Hackney WickED received commission from the Arts Council England for a series of artworks and open studio bursaries.
We watched live performances throughout Hackney, visited many exciting exhibitions specifically curated for the event, and even went on a walking tour of Hackney’s hidden gems.
It was a festival with so much to offer. But more than that it gives tremendous insight into the momentous changes that are occurring in the area and the unique, artistic community that is Hackney.
Make sure to check it out when it is back next year!
